The Week in iOS Apps: Create your own text-base GIFs with GIPHY Says

You’ll have a blast with GIPHY’s latest app, featured in this week’s roundup. Plus, you’ll find two new apps to help you learn about and make music, and another one that lets you produce your own radio shows. Read on!

We’ve told you before about  Anchor, the free iPhone app that lets you create radio- and podcast-style shows directly from your phone. The latest update lets you conduct interviews via phone—just make a call and record a conversation to publish to your “station.”

Looperverse ($10, iPhone and iPad) is billed as “the ultimate loop recording and performance system for iOS.” It lets you record and edit up to 16 tracks of audio content; it’s designed to be used in conjunction with the Looperverse loop pedal we told you about earlier this week.

The Tune Zoo ($3, iPad) uses animated animals to teach young, budding musicians the essentials of music, including melody and harmony, expression, performance, interaction, collaboration, composition, arrangement, and improvisation. Say the makers: “There are no rules, high scores, time limits or stress—just open-ended creative, constructive play.”

Bethesda Pinball (free with in-app purchases, iPhone and iPad) lets you play pinball versions of Bethesda’s franchise games like Doom, Fallout, and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. You can also test your skills against fellow pinball wizards with an “asynchronous multiplayer” feature.

GIPHY Says (free, iPhone) lets you turn your own image and voice into a GIF: “Just hit record and start speaking to add some text. Then share your looping creations anywhere.” So the competition is on: Can you express yourself as well in person as you can with an Arrested Development punchline?

Listabot ($2, iPhone and iPad) is a time-tracking app for freelancers and contractors—anybody who keeps “billable hours.” Not only does it let you start, pause, and stop time on various projects, the app also generates a spreadsheet with your hourly rates calculated for you.

Scheduled (free, iPhone) lets you compose and schedule text messages for iMessage, Facebook Messenger, Whatsapp, Telegram, Twitter, and Phone. It’s more of a reminder app, really: You can compose and schedule your message weeks in advance; when the moment comes you’ll be alerted—that’s when you select the message app, and push “send.”

Transformers: Forged to Fight (free with in-app purchases, iPhone and iPad) lets you join Optimus Prime, Megatron, Bumblebee, Waspinator, Rhinox, Grimlock, and Soundwave to battle other players, team up with friends, and generally causes mechanized havoc. This week’s update adds new chapters to the story, as well as a “Legends of Cybertron” challenge for advanced players.
