The Week in iOS Accessories and Cases: A new camera for Apple HomeKit

This week’s roundup includes a new HomeKit-compatible camera that lets you see the whole room—even in the dark. Read on!

The D-Link Omna 180 Cam HD Camera ($199.95 MSRP) is now available to slot into your Apple HomeKit system. It features a 180-degree wide-angle lens—letting you see an entire room with just the one camera—infrared LEDs to provide night vision up to 16 feet, a microSD card slot to record video clips, and more. And it’s simple: Just control the camera using the Home app on your iPhone or iPad.

This company has added two new products to its high-end headphone lineup. The Quad Driver ($200 MSRP, pictured; same price on AmazonRemove product link) “uses four drivers to deliver unsurpassed clarity and dynamic power with a Hi-Res bandwidth,” while the Triple Lightning ($150 MSRP; $139.05 on AmazonRemove product link) includes “an on-board DAC that provides pristine Hi-Definition audio.” The latter product also includes a five-way joystick controller that allows users to take calls, control volume, and change tracks.

The 2-in-1 Lightning Charger Adapter ($40 MSRP; available on AmazonRemove product link) is built for the iPhone 7, letting users listen to their music and charge their iOS device at the same time. But beware: The adapter doesn’t support control of either music or phone calls.

The Flip stylus ($80 MSRP) is a “smart” device that doesn’t need batteries or a Bluetooth connection to do its work: The stylus is equipped with magnets that work in conjunction with your tablet to determine the location and orientation of the stylus, enabling palm rejection, flip to erase, and other features. It comes with interchangeable tips to let you create precisely the writing, drawing, or painting you choose on your iPad.

The Hover Camera Passport Drone ($499.95 MSRP) is a flying camera that broadcasts live video directly to your iPhone or iPad. It’s simple to use and loyal like a puppy dog: Tap the power button, release the drone, and Passport hovers steadily in place, following you and your iOS device wherever you go.

The SM-L300 Portable Printer is built for entrepreneurs, a “point of sale” machine that lets you print receipts via Bluetooth from your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. Star Micronics says it’s perfect for restaurant or retail use—or, since the machine can accommodate thermal receipt paper and label paper, it even works for heavy-duty use in warehouses. The S1 Smartphone DockRemove product link ($40 MSRP; $10 on AmazonRemove product link) is probably the simplest iPhone dock we’ve seen: An angled piece of metal with a hole in the stand to make room for your Lightning cable. Then again: What more do you really need from an iPhone dock?

The  Ztylus Slim Apple Pencil CaseRemove product link ($34.95 MSRP; same price on AmazonRemove product link) is made of aircraft-grade aluminum and holds your Apple Pencil even when it’s in use. When you’re done, just retract the tip into the case, like a pen, to protect it against accidental damage. It also includes a slip, so you can tuck it into your front shirt pocket like all the other cool engineers.

Kerf makes all kinds of great wooden cases for the iPhone, but we wanted to highlight the Limited Edition Amboyna Burl Case for iPhone 7. Why? Well, it’s the most expensive iPhone 7 case in Kerf’s lineup, at $359 MSRP (the same case for iPhone 7 Plus costs an additional $20) but there’s a reason for the cost: It’s made of Ambonya, “one of the most sought-after burl woods,” and it features clickable wood buttons and a soft ultrasuede inner lining, as well as full coverage around the phone to protect it from drops. The Protean (a $49 pledge through Indiegogo) is billed as “the world’s thinnest modular iPhone battery case.” It includes a 2,400-mAh battery, weighs 105 grams, and is just 10.5 millimeters thick. Better yet? As you can see here, it’s made to accommodate a host of other accessories.

Here’s another great product from Pad & Quill: The Walden Case for 2017 iPad ($50 MSRP) lets you “wrap the cover over for a paperback reading experience, prop it like a tent for unencumbered viewing or get hands-on while immersing yourself in a favorite app.” It comes in a range of color and material options.

Here’s the latest twist on an old favorite: The BookBook Rutledge Edition for 2017 iPad ($90 MSRP) disguises your new tablet as an old book, can be used as  movie-watching stand, and includes a built-in keyboard stand for comfortable on-screen typing. The exterior is made of genuine leather.
