The HomePod is a good smart speaker for folks who like to fall asleep to the sounds of their favorite playlist, podcast, or even the ambient sounds of nature. The latest patch allows you to set up a sleep timer, which automatically cuts off the music or sound after a specified time—hopefully after you’ve fallen asleep. Here’s how to set it up.
First, make sure your iPhone is running iOS 13.2 and your HomePod is running 13.2.1. After that, fire up a playlist, podcast, or ambient sound track that you’d like to fall asleep to, and then ask Siri to set up a sleep timer for a specific time limit.
Keep in mind that you can only ask for minutes or hours: Siri won’t help if you ask for the music to turn off at 10 p.m. The conversation might go something like this:
“Hey, Siri, set up a timer for 30 minutes.” (Note: You can set a sleep timer for anywhere from a couple of seconds to 23 hours and 59 minutes.)
Siri will then say, “Okay, I’ll stop playing in 30 minutes.”
Once the timer runs out, the music will fade away over a couple of seconds.
If you don’t give Siri a specific duration, it’ll ask for one. Here’s how that conversation might go:
“Hey, Siri, make a sleep timer.”
Siri: “For how long?”
“Okay, I’ll stop playing in one hour.”
How to cancel a sleep timer
If you need to cancel a sleep timer, that’s easy, too. Just say, “Hey, Siri, cancel that sleep timer,” and Siri will respond, “Your sleep timer is canceled.”
