Our Verdict
Having four USB ports in a line ensures easy connectivity and access to your peripherals and the mHub performs a vital role for those who simply don’t have enough connections. The neat and tidy compact design is a plus, especially for MacBook users, although we could live without the constant glow when in use.
If, like many Mac users, you have built up a collection of peripherals over time, you may find yourself short of a connection or two, especially as Apple appears to have all but abandoned FireWire for USB. The 13in unibody MacBook, for instance, comes with two USB 2.0 ports, and the MacBook Air has just one. Thankfully, third-party manufacturers supply a range of USB hubs to ensure you’re not constantly swapping USB cables.
The Macally mHub is a four-port USB 2.0 hub for Mac and PC users. Ideally suited for those on the move or just short of space, the mHub is compact and light enough to store in a laptop case or even a pocket. The black rectangular design is solidly built and unassuming. The hub does light up when in use, though, which may prove a diversion for some who insist on a distraction free work environment.
The mHub comes with a good length USB cable, long enough so that you’re not restricted as you work. An AC adaptor jack connection is included, allowing you to use the hub to provide power to USB devices that require it, but you’ll have to supply your own adaptor. (Some online listings suggest the mHub comes with an AC adaptor, but our review unit did not.) Performance, compatible with both USB 2.0 and USB 1.1 devices, is good. We were able to run several devices from the mHub, including a 1TB external hard drive, without significantly compromising performance.
