The best iPhone apps that use Touch ID

File storage app Dropbox lets you keep your photos, documents, videos and other files stowed away safely in the cloud. They’ll be backed up should something ever happen to your iPhone or iPad, and you can use it to easily send files to your friends, family and colleagues.

Dropbox can be secured using Touch ID, too, so you’ll be able to use your fingerprint to get access to the app and keep prying eyes out.

Security services are a natural fit for Touch ID, and 1 Password is our favourite app for storing web passwords on iPhone securely. It can use Touch ID for extra security, too. Just tap Share > 1Password and tap your finger on the Touch ID scanner to enter your password. It’s a revelation in web security.

An alternative password manager is Dashlane, which also takes advantage of Touch ID to make your passwords extra secure but easy to access for you alone. It means you can have really good, secure passwords for each of your apps and accounts and change them regularly, but you don’t need to remember them all. Very handy.

Another natural fit for Touch ID is online payments, which is why PayPal makes use of the fingerprint scanner for its iOS app. You can ensure that, even if someone gets hold of your iPhone, they’re not going to be able to access your PayPal account without you.

Evernote is our favourite-taking app, and it’s capable of storing and organising just about everything you can write, snap or record on your iPhone. Create to-do lists, save your thoughts and sync it all between all of your devices.

Users of the premium version of Evernote (£3.99 per month) get access to a passcode lock with Touch ID compatibility, along with a whole stack of other extras.

Readdle’s Documents 5 is a PDF reader and cloud download manager that lets you read, listen, view and annotate almost any file, document, book or other content right on your iPhone or iPad without needing to print it. You can also manage your files there, and sync them with your cloud services.

All of its content can be protected with a password or Touch ID to keep it safe and sound.

Day One is a great diary app that keeps getting better. It’s simple to use, lets you quickly add photos and locations, and provides a calendar and map view for when you want to revisit past entries. It also has Touch ID support so you can keep your private journal hidden away ready to unlock using the fingerprint scanner.

A similar journaling app that’s a little bit cheaper is Momento, which also lets you capture all of your memories in one place. It collects your memories from feeds like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and more too, and it’s all kept safe behind your Touch ID fingerprint scanner.

Another journaling option with a bit of a twist is Memoir. You can sync it with your camera roll, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Foursquare, Dropbox and more, and Memoir will show you memories of things you shared when you were nearby, this time last year and more. It’s all protected by Touch ID to keep your memories safe.

Amazon sure does like to make it easy to give it money. The ubiquitous retailer was quick off the mark to integrate Touch ID into its app when it was launched two years ago. Securely pay for your products by tapping the iPhone’s fingerprint sensor, it’s that simple.
