The best room escape games & puzzle games for The Room fans

We loved The Room, the beautifully crafted and absolutely mind-bending game that’s a mystery, puzzle, point-and-click, adventure and room escape game all rolled into one. Then came The Room Two and The Room Three, catering to our craving for more of that satisfying solving action.

And most recently, The Room: Old Sins (which is essentially The Room 4) is yet another brilliant addition to the series that we’d recommend if you haven’t tried it yet.

If you have, and you’re desperate for some more puzzle-solving games like it, we’ve got a list of our favourite iPad and iPhone games that we know The Room fans will love.

The Room

For those of you who’ve yet to play The Room, let me fill you in. The entire game is set on and within one intricate safe, whose surfaces are adorned by strange mechanisms and logic puzzles, behind which smaller, more challenging boxes lurk. Not only are the puzzles super-challenging but enormously satisfying to solve, they also lend themselves perfectly to the iPad’s touchscreen.

The Room Two and The Room Three took the first game’s formula and broadened its scope, spreading its puzzles across various boxes (and other locked constructions) in multiple rooms, adopting more of the traditional room escape game style.

The fourth, called Old Sins, feels a lot more like the original game, centering around a creepy doll house that you’ll need to explore.

We’ve yet to find another game that quite matches the brilliance of The Room, but there are many that come very close, and that we really enjoyed puzzling over. The House of Davinci

Find The House of Davinci on the App Store: The House of Davinci (£4.99/$4.99)

The House of Davinci by Blue Brain games is definitely one for fans of The Room. In fact, it’s almost too much like The Room for our liking, but there’s no doubt that it is brilliantly designed and so much fun to play. Explore Leonardo’s workshop, unlocking boxes, finding hidden objects and solving mechanical puzzles. It’s challenging enough to leave you stumped from time-to-time, but not too difficult that you’ll give up completely.

Forever Lost

Find Forever Lost on the App Store: Forever Lost Episode 1 (£2.99/$2.99) | Forever Lost Episode 2 (£4.99/$4.99) | Forever Lost Episode 3 (£5.99/$5.99) | Forever Lost Complete Collection (£11.99/$11.99)

First up is Forever Lost, one of our absolute favourites. There are currently three episodes of Forever Lost available to buy in the iOS App Store, all of which are as dark and sinister-looking as The Room. Explore the Spooky, deserted buildings and towns to find items to help you solve puzzles and uncover the mysteries that’ll lead to your escape. Highly recommended.

Machinarium

Find Machinarium on the App Store: Machinarium (£4.99/$4.99)

If you’re after a serious challenge, try Machinarium. We loved it so, so much, but boy is it tricky. Each room you come to has new puzzles to solve as you control a cute robot character on his quest to find his ladyfriend.

Machinarium follows more of a linear story than The Room and Forever Lost, but it presents similar puzzles and requires you to use your brain in that same, logical way. Plus, the story is rather great, and we really enjoyed the app’s overall look and feel.

Tiny Bang Story

Find Tiny Bang Story on the App Store: Tiny Bang Story (£4.99/$4.99)

Another one of our favourites is Tiny Bang Story. This wonderfully animated game begins with the puzzle pieces that make up this fun, intriguing world being scattered across the globe, and it’s your job to retrieve them and put them back together.

To find the puzzle pieces, you’ll need to explore each illustrated level and talk to the quirky characters, solving some tough puzzles and collecting items as you go. We were sad when this one was over (it’s not a particularly long game) because it was so, so brilliant. We’d absolutely recommend Tiny Bang Story to puzzle game lovers and fans of The Room.

Monument Valley

Find Monument Valley on the App Store:  Monument Valley 1 (£4.99/$4.99) | Monument Valley 2 (£4.99/$4.99)

Monument Valley is a hugely popular and gorgeously designed puzzle game that The Room fans will enjoy. There are two available, and while they’re not particularly long they’re well worth the money.

Guide the princess through complicated architecture, discovering hidden paths and mastering optical illusions.

Agent A

Find Agent A on the iOS App Store: Agent A (£4.99/$4.99)

This game is a real crowd pleaser thanks to its entertaining story and gorgeous design plus some brilliant puzzles that’ll have you hooked. Its puzzles vary in difficulty and we found ourselves struggling with one or two but that makes it all the more satisfying to complete.

It’s also one of the most affordable apps and has no in-app purchases to catch you out along the way. Its developers have been known to bundle additional chapters within updates with no additional fees too.

Dr.Stanley’s House

Find Dr.Stanley’s House on the App Store: Dr.Stanley’s House 1 (Free) | Dr.Stanley’s House 2 (Free) | Dr.Stanley’s House 3 (Free)

A free room escape game now, this one based on a 2005 Flash-based game that was released on the web. While Dr.Stanley’s House is not quite as visually appealing as some of the other games on this list, it presents players with the same kinds of puzzles.

In a bit of a twist on the traditional room escape, though, this game actually requires the player to get into a house, which is locked. But don’t worry, you’ve been invited!

We’ve not yet played them, but there’s actually a second and third instalment of Dr.Stanley’s House now available for iOS too.

The Silent Age

Find The Silent Age on the App Store: The Silent Age (Free)

We really love the visual style of The Silent Age, another point and click game that requires you to collect items to solve the puzzles throughout. It’s got a solid and intriguing storyline too, complete with time travel and the apocalypse, which we found became quite addictive.

Plus, Episode 2 is available now after what felt like a very long wait. It’s part of an update, so no need to download a separate app.

realMyst

Find realMyst on the App Store: realMyst (£6.99/$6.99)

Here’s one for those of you looking for a serious challenge. Be prepared to get out your pen and notepad, as you’ll need it to keep track of the clues hidden throughout this game. It’s actually a port of the game Myst for Mac that was released in 1993. The game has since been remade and ported to PlayStation and Nintendo consoles and more.

The only thing we weren’t so keen on with Myst is the controls. It’s a first person game so we found we suffered from motion sickness after playing it for prolonged periods of time, and it can be a bit of a frustrating struggle to move about.

Big Fish

Find Big Fish on the App Store.

Big Fish Games is a huge name in the iOS app developer space. They make all sorts of apps, but many of them take the form of a room escape or point and click game that, while not as challenging as games like The Room, can still offer similar puzzles and entertainment on a rainy day.

Most Big Fish Games have free versions available to try, which will let you play a level or two before asking for cash to unlock the in-app purchase full game. We haven’t played all of the Big Fish Games apps (there are far too many) but among those we’ve played and would recommend are Mystery Case Files: Ravenhearts Unlocked and Grim Tales: The Heir.
