With the 25 July release of OS X Mountain Lion came the launch of Safari 6.0 for Mac OS X 10.7 Lion and 10.8 Mountain Lion, but it appears that not only has Apple ceased development of the Windows version of its browser, it has also left Windows users exposed to malicious users.
Window users have been left vulnerable after Apple has failed to update their version of the Safari browser. According to Sophos security researcher, Joshua Long, there are potentially 121 unpatched vulnerabilities, making Safari for Windows no longer safe for use.
Apple’s documentation about the security content of Safari 6 also reveals that almost all of these vulnerabilities expose users to attack by maliciously crafted web pages.
At the bottom of Apple’s Safari page, it states in fine print, “The latest version of Safari is available in Mountain Lion. The latest version of Safari for Lion is available through Software update,” with no mention of Safari for Windows.Apple has since removed any mention of Safari for Windows from its website and has also taken away the download link to Safari 5.1.7 for Windows.
Even though Safari for Windows is available on millions of PCs through the iTunes auto update system, it has a really small user base and has never exceeded 1 percent of Windows users.
