Apple has begun a MacBook Air flash storage drive replacement program for June 2012 to June 2013 models after determining that some 64GB and 128GB flash drives in that generation of MacBook Air may fail.
On Thursday, Apple posted information about the recall on its support website, which recommends that owners of MacBook Airs that fit the criteria should test to see whether their drive is affected. To do so, go to the Mac App Store, click on Updates and choose the MacBook Air Flash Storage Firmware Update 1.1, which will test your drive to find out whether it is affected.
If your drive is affected by the issue, Apple or an Apple Authorised Service provider will replace the drive for free, so get in touch to arrange an appointment to get a new flash drive installed.
Apple “strongly recommends” that MacBook Air owners whose drives are affected should not install any updates or new applications on their computer. They should also back up data on a regular basis until a replacement drive is received to prevent losing any data should the drive fail.
Any customers who have previously paid to have their 2012/2013 MacBook Air repaired due to a flash drive failure could be eligible for a refund, and should contact Apple.
