By default the iPhone (and iPad) keyboard makes a clicking noise every time you press a key. If you find iOS’s keyboard clicks annoying you aren’t alone. Luckily you can switch them off.
In this guide we show you how to turn off the iPhone and iPad’s keyboard noises.
There are actually three ways to mute your iOS keyboard, read on to find out how!
How to turn off keyboard clicks using the mute button
The easiest way to quickly turn off keyboard clicks on your iPhone or iPad is to use the Mute slider on the side of the device.
The mute button is the rocker switch located on the left-hand side of the iPhone, just above the volume controls.
- Pull the mute button forward if you want your iPhone to make noises.
- Push it backwards if you want the iPhone to be silent.
- You can tell if your iPhone is muted because an image, like this, will appear showing you that the Ringer is on silent.
Using the iPhone’s Mute switch is the fastest and easiest method to stop keyboard noises; unfortunately it’s not a perfect solution.
The Mute switch gets rid of all sound from your iPhone, including any music you might have playing, game audio and ringtone alerts. So if you do this you will have to switch the Mute slider back to on when you’ve finished with the keyboard.
This technique also works with some iPads… sort of. Most iPads do have a mute switch, like the iPhone (it’s on the righthand side, above the volume buttons), but this switch actually does double duties: the user sets it to either mute and unmute the volume, or lock and unlock the orientation of the screen (ie it lets you stop the screen from rotating when you turn the device).
If your iPad switch is set to lock/unlock the screen orientation, you’ll have to do the following:
- Go into the Settings app.
- Tap General.
- Under ‘USE SIDE SWITCH TO:’, tick mute.
You might want to use the mute button if you are taking screenshots on the train – or people might think you are photographing them…
How to turn off keyboard clicks using the volume controls
By default, the keyboard click noise is linked to the rest of the iOS device’s volume settings. So you can turn off the keyboard click noise on an iPhone or iPad by simply turning down the volume. Here’s how to do that:
- Tap and hold the Volume Down setting.
- Alternatively, slide up from the bottom of the screen to reveal Control Centre, and use the volume slider. Slide it to the bottom to set the volume to silent. (If you are using an iPhone X here’s how to access Control Centre).
While this technique works on the iPad as well as the iPhone, it also reduces and mutes the other audio on your device. So you won’t be able to listen to music or app audio.
How to turn off keyboard clicks using Settings
The best way to turn off keyboard clicks on an iPhone or iPad is to use the Sound options in Settings. Here is how to turn off keyboard clicks in Settings:
- Tap on Settings > Sounds & Haptics.
- Scroll down to reveal Keyboard clicks.
- Set Keyboard Clicks to Off.
By using the options in the Sounds area of Settings you can mute the keyboard clicks on the iOS device, but still hear other audio such as music and app sounds.
