Are you experiencing issues when trying to use Apple Maps on your iPhone or iPad? It could be anything, from issues with turn-by-turn navigation to issues displaying live traffic information. Most the time it’ll be due to connectivity issues, but there’s also a chance that Apple is experiencing issues with its servers or systems.
While there’s little you can do to remedy the situation if that is the case, there is a way for you to monitor the status of Apple Maps so you know once it’s working again. Here, we show you how you can check the server status of Apple Maps and all included services using official and third-party status checking websites.

Check Apple’s System Status website
The first step in establishing whether Apple Maps is experiencing server-related issues is to head to Apple’s official System Status webpage. As long as you’ve got a connection to the internet (if you can’t access the site, that may be the reason you’re having issues!), the Apple System Status site should provide you with the most up-to-date information about a whole range of Apple services, from iOS Activations to iCloud and, of course, Apple Maps.
As well as displaying the current status of Apple’s services, the site will also inform users of recent disruptions that have been resolved, and indicates whether there is any upcoming maintenance that could cause issues.
If there’s a message next to any Maps-related services (Display, Routing & Navigation, Search or Traffic), click on it; it’ll give you more information about the issue, including the kinds of problems users would have/are currently experiencing.
It’s a handy website to check when you’re having connectivity issues with any Apple service as if the site is reporting no issues, then it’s fairly likely that it’s something to do with your iOS device or your connection to the internet.

Use a third-party status checking website
Apple’s System Status website isn’t perfect though, as we’ve experienced issues with Apple services in the past when the official site has indicated that all is running smoothly.
It could be down to one of several reasons: the outage could be localised to your area rather than a global issue, or it could be that Apple’s System Status site is only updated every 5/10/30/60 minutes and it hasn’t been recently updated to reflect the new issues. But what are you to do when that situation occurs?
Thankfully, there’s a range of third-party services that rely on crowdsourced data to provide up-to-date status information on a range of online services, from Amazon to PlayStation Network and of course, Apple’s online services.
One such website is Outage.Report: it’ll give you the current status of Apple Maps, along with a history of reported problems and a live outage map so you can see whether the issue is localised or worldwide. We’d also usually recommend Down Detector, but at the time of writing the service doesn’t track Apple Maps (although it does cover a host of other Apple services).

Check your iOS device
If, after checking Apple’s System Status website and third-party websites mentioned above, you find that Apple Maps is working properly then there might be an issue with your device. The first step is to establish whether or not you’re connected to the internet. This can be done by opening Safari and trying to access www.google.co.uk – if it loads, internet connectivity isn’t the issue.
The next step would be to reset your device in case there’s an issue with iOS. For more information on resetting your iPhone or iPad, take a look at our guide: How to reset an iPhone or iPad
If you’ve still got issues with Apple Maps after resetting your iOS device, it’s time to take a trip to the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store. To find out more about the Genius Bar and booking appointments online, take a look at this: How to book an Apple Store appointment
