Apple Watch Series 2 users are set to be left stranded on watchOS 6 when Apple releases the follow-up watchOS 7 update in the autumn, if the latest report is accurate.
The news comes from The Verifier, which has previously provided information on what new features will arrive in watchOS 7. The site does not have a long history of leaking data on Apple products, so the rumour should be taken with a pinch of salt, but it makes sense based on past behaviour.
If The Verifier is correct, the following devices will be able to install watchOS 7:
- Apple Watch Series 3
- Apple Watch Series 4
- Apple Watch Series 5
While the following models will miss out:
- Apple Watch ‘Series 0’ (original 2015 model)
- Apple Watch Series 1
- Apple Watch Series 2
Apple had already ended software support for the original model, which can update no later than watchOS 4.3.2, but this will be a body blow for owners of the Series 1 and 2. The Series 2 was a landmark release and a huge upgrade on the original, although it has since been outshone by the slightly better Series 3 and the larger-screened 4 and 5.
The watchOS 7 update will be rolled out in autumn, but we will find out whether this rumour is correct several months before that. Apple will showcase the update (along with iOS 14, iPadOS 14, macOS 10.16 and tvOS 14) in June, at WWDC 2020.
