Apple executive have spoken publicly about the importance of work-life balance amid the COVID-19 outbreak, but a new report suggests that some of the company’s employees are not happy with the way things are working out.
In a statement on 13 March, Tim Cook said: “We have expanded our leave policies to accommodate personal or family health circumstances created by COVID-19 – including recovering from an illness, caring for a sick loved one, mandatory quarantining, or childcare challenges due to school closures.” And the firm promised to develop more flexible working methods for its employees who work from home and who have children.
Yet a number of Apple employees who spoke to CNET say they are struggling to deal with the twin commitments of work and childcare. Many parents are currently forced to take care of their children because schools are closed, and most are working from home after Apple closed its stores and offices.
Apple has taken several measures to ease the workload, saying in a previous statement that “no deadline is more important than caring for loved ones”. However, the measures do not appear to be sufficient, judging by the statements from some Apple employees.
