There still remain four to five months before Apple unveils the iPhone 12, but the Apple rumoursphere is already fizzing with speculation about the successor iPhone 13.
According to the well-known technology leaker Fudge, Apple will ditch the Lightning port on next year’s iPhone models. There’s no talk of switching to USB-C, either, even though such a prototype exists; instead, the idea is for the handsets to be charged wirelessly, reports MacRumors.
It’s a bold prediction, but this fits with other sources. Jon Prosser also predicts that we’ll get a portless iPhone in 2021.
However, Apple has filed for a patent to improve the Lightning cable, so that does suggest that it won’t be cutting it out quite yet, read: Apple patents fix for fraying Lightning cables.
Another new feature on the iPhone 13 will be support for the Smart Connector, which will make the device compatible with various accessories.
Note: The EU could bring in a law standardising charging in 2021 which may well mean Apple does’t have a choice…
