Apple CEO Tim Cook has on a number of occasions donated large sums to charity, and in recent years these donations have taken the form of shares.
According to the US Securities and Exchange Commission, Tim Cook donated 10,715 shares to an unknown charity on 20 August. The value of these shares is just over $5.4m, or roughly £4.1m.
Following the donation, Tim Cook was left with 837,374 shares in Apple, worth roughly $420m.
Perhaps feeling that this number was worryingly low, the company awarded Cook 560,000 further shares for strong performance, reported to the SEC on 24 August, although for tax purposes, 294,840 of these were withheld. As part of the same report, it emerged that Cook sold the remaining 265,160 new shares on 25 August, netting a total of roughly $132m.
Tim Cook has previously stated that his plan is to gradually donate most of the wealth, apart from a small amount that will go towards his nephew’s education. It’s believed that he may have become a billionaire earlier this month.
