According to data from Sensor Tower, despite a “boom” in Android downloads, Apple received almost twice as much app revenue again in the third quarter of 2020.
Based on preliminary estimates from its Store Intelligence solution, Sensor Tower reports that user spending on in-app purchases, subscriptions and one-time app purchases in the App Store has risen to $19 billion worldwide.
This corresponds to a growth of 31% compared to the previous year.
According to the figures, Google’s Play Store grew by 34% in installations over the same period, but in terms of revenue this only amounted to $10.3 billion net.
That means that in the third quarter of this year the App Store generated almost twice as much revenue as Google did.
In total, according to the Sensor Tower report, app buyers spent 32% more in the third quarter of this year than the $22.2 billion spent in both app stores in the third quarter of last year. Installs saw a 23.3% rise year-on-year to 36.5 billion downloads in the third quarter.
The majority of global sales came from Apple – despite fewer installations. Sales on the App Store increased by just 2.5 percent with an estimated 8.2 billion installations. The Play Store experienced a boom with 28.3 billion downloads, according to the report. This corresponds to a year-on-year increase of 31 percent.
Nevertheless, Android and its Google Play Store is far from catching up interns of sales and revenue compared to the iOS App Store. Previously we have reported that developers for iOS apps generate “dramatically” higher revenues than those for Android.
Sensor Tower suggests that the Covid 19 pandemic is one reason for the high additional revenue from app sales. This is due to people spending more time at home and focusing more on digital media.
