The messaging service Telegram has now added the ability for users on iOS to import their chat history from another messaging app, WhatsApp. This was first noticed by 9to5Mac.
The new feature is available in version 7.4.1 of Telegram and allows users to continue their conversations there as long as both WhatsApp users also use Telegram.
The new feature comes at an convenient time. WhatsApp has lost a number of users after controversy (and, the firm would argue, misunderstanding) over changes to its terms of use, which the firm has since delayed. As former WhatsApp users look for alternatives, Telegram has seen its user base expand. Similarly, Signal reports that it now has more than 500 million active users.
In addition to WhatsApp, it is also possible to import chat history from Line and KaKaoTalk to Signal. The import feature is also expected to appear on Android in the near future.
