The experts agree: Behind the scenes, Apple has been working on a foldable iPhone for a long time. But we will have to wait a while longer before a foldable iPhone actually launches.
A foldable iPhone will probably not appear in the foreseeable future. At least Mark Gurman, Apple expert at Bloomberg, is sure of that. According to him, it will take at least two to three years for Apple to develop a product ready for the market. Gurman is one of the most reliable leakers, according to AppleTrack, with an 88 percent accuracy rating.
This is yet another revelation from Gurman’s PowerOn newsletter (subscription required to get the complete newsletter). Gurman also predicted that the iMac and Mac Pro will launch in November 2022 and that new AirPods will launch alongside the iPhone 13 in this week’s newsletter.
Regarding a foldable iPhone Gurman said: “Apple will do this eventually, but it will take at least two or three years. I personally think that for me and many others, an iPhone with a huge, expandable 7 or 8-inch screen would be perfect equipment”.
Given that Samsung and Huawei have already introduced foldable smartphones a delay of up to three more years from Apple – which by that time will amount to six years after the rest of the industry – might seem surprising. However, Apple has a reputation for waiting until new technologies meet its high requirements for quality and reliability before adopting them, and the foldable smartphones that have so far launched have received criticism.
Apple will no doubt continue to work on foldable smartphones technology in the background, as it has already been.
On the other hand, we may only have a couple of years to wait. Ming-Chi Kuo believes that Apple will introduce a foldable smartphone in 2023.
