It’s official, the next Apple Keynote will take place on 14 September. Apple has sent out invites with the tagline: “California Streaming”. Based on the leaks and rumours we already have a good idea of what awaits us. But what more does the tagline tell us?
On Tuesday 14 September it’s very likely that Apple will show off its new iPhones as well as the Apple Watch Series 7. We are also hearing that we may be seeing new AirPods. For more information read Apple iPhone Event: Date, time and product announcements.
Words…
Other than that, what else do the words “California Streaming” suggest?
Possibility 1: It is another virtual event in the second year of the pandemic that can only be watched via stream and unfortunately not at the Steve Jobs Theater in Apple Park.
Possibility 2: Apple could also discuss its streaming services, Apple Music and TV+, at the event. This autumn a number of new series and movies are set to arrive on Apple TV+, such as upcoming series Foundation.
Possibility 3: Apple hasn’t been making it easy for the game streaming services such as Microsoft Xcloud and Google Stadia to use the App Store. It does allow it, but the services have to “adhere to all guidelines”. These guidelines mean all games have to be submitted to Apple as a separate app and reviewed by Apple. Which isn’t exactly what the games streaming services were looking for. Could Apple concede even more to third-party games streaming? We doubt it.
Possibility 4: Apple could launch a version of macOS that you stream to any computer. Kind of like Windows 365, which lets users (including Mac and iOS users) run Windows on a cloud PC. Read: How Windows 365 is bringing Windows to Mac, iPad and iPhone.
Possibility 5: Whatever our hopes for hidden secrets, there can be no doubt that the invite is referencing The Mamas & The Papa’s hit from 1966. With lyrics that include “All the leaves are brown, And the sky is grey, I’ve been for a walk, On a winter’s day.” It seems fitting as we approach the autumn and winter.
Possibility 6: ‘Streaming’ could also fit with the iPhone’s camera now making live streams, with a portrait function in the video, possible. Technical requirements for his are not only the new A15 SoC, but also mmWave, which Apple seems set to now offer worldwide, even though most countries, including the UK, don’t have it yet.
And pictures…
It’s not only the words “California Streaming” that could give us an insight to what Apple might have up its sleeve. The image of the invitation could also give us an indication.
The image that Apple has chosen as a backdrop for the keynote invitation is a transparent Apple logo with a white glow against a natural backdrop with a body of water and mountains, presumably in California.
Possibility 7: One of the new features in iOS 15 will allow users to play relaxing Background Noise including the sounds of the ocean, river or rain. What better image to call up these sounds.
Possibility 8: You could almost think that this is the wallpaper for the new version of macOS, maybe even a region near the coastal city of Monterey, after which the upcoming macOS version is named. However, macOS Monterey was already presented at WWDC in the summer and Apple deals only marginally with software in its September keynotes (usually just revealing the download date), so we do not expect much news in this regard.
Possibility 9: The transparent Apple logo also allows for some wild interpretations, for example, how about news about those long rumoured Apple Glasses? Especially with Facebook said to be launching their’s on 9 September 2021.
Possibility 10: The colours around the edge of the transparent apple and the background could potentially indicate new tones of the iPhones: matt black and sunset orange are rumoured.
Possibility 11: Finally, Apple also has an AR animation to invite people to the keynote. The AR animation, which converts the apple to the date 9.14 (14 September in American format), could hint at the always on display everyone is hoping for with the iPhone 13.
As you can see, there is a lot of room for conjecture, and probably none of it will transpire. Luckily we only have to wait a few days to find out.
