If we can believe the latest rumours on Twitter, the launch of the second-generation AirPods Pro has been pushed back from an expected second quarter to the third quarter of 2022. In other words, next autumn.
The information comes from the Twitter user FrontTron. The tech leaker isn’t especially well known – they don’t appear in AppleTrack’s source leaderboard, even in the section for “limited record” – but was early to reveal the date of the third-generation AirPods.
Release dates 💯 AirPods 3: – 2021 Q3 ✅ AirPods Pro 2: – At least 2022 Q2 ❎ ➡️ Changed to 2022 Q3 https://t.co/YaP39JoC0t

FrontTron simply quotes their own original prediction and puts a cross next to the previously claimed Q2 forecast. It isn’t clear, therefore, if the leaker’s sources simply got it wrong – in other words, it’s the prediction that has “changed”, rather than the launch schedule – or if Apple has actually changed its plans.
Either way, it’s an astonishingly long wait between generations of a successful product. The original AirPods Pro came out in the autumn of 2019; a Q3 2022 launch would mean a gap of three years.
So far, few details about the AirPods Pro 2 have leaked, but according to Bloomberg’s Apple expert Mark Gurman, we’ll be getting a new design without protruding stems. There are also rumours of updated sensors, which could be used to keep better track of how much we move, among other things.
In all likelihood, we can expect more rumours about the new headphones to emerge in the coming months. You can keep up with the latest rumours with our new AirPods Pro hub.
