According to a new report from Bloomberg, Apple has been accelerating plans to complete and launch a self-driving electric car since September.
Since Kevin Lynch took over leadership of Special Projects, unnamed employees within the group say, there is a new optimism about the development of the Apple Car. Lynch is said to have focused efforts on developing a fully self-driving car, whereas his predecessor Doug Field (who left in September) led the development of a more Tesla-like solution in which the AI helps out and can drive in certain situations but not take over completely.
Apple’s timetable for launch has been accelerated and, according to Bloomberg, Lynch is aiming for Apple to have a car out as early as four years from now, towards the end of 2025. That compares to a timeframe of five to seven years, which was planned earlier this year. The biggest hurdle right now is getting the self-driving system ready.
The company reportedly hasn’t decided yet whether the car will be sold or leased to individuals, or used for an Uber-like taxi service.
