Apple ‘still working on AirPower-style charger’

Apple’s AirPower wireless charger remains one of the company’s most famous failures, having been announced in 2017 and summarily cancelled in 2019 as a result of reported practical difficulties.

But the project may yet bear fruit. Mark Gurman, Bloomberg’s knowledgeable Apple reporter, writes in his latest Power On newsletter that Cupertino’s engineers are working on a new multi-device wireless charger along similar lines.

This isn’t a new concept, by the way: AirPower has been the subject of multiple revival rumours across the two years since it was abandoned. This summer we covered a report that Apple had refused to give up on the idea.

The company is also said to be working on developing new technology for short- and long-range wireless charging: something that would enable remote charging, unlike today’s wireless charging based on induction.

Apple’s goal is said to be a future where its devices can be used to charge each other. For example, an iPhone could charge an Apple Watch or a pair of AirPods.

When the new multi-device charger is likely to be released is unclear at this point.
