April 2020 saw the launch of the second-gen iPhone SE, a 4.7in budget model that replaced the old stalwart iPhone 8. It was immediately popular, and fans of small and comparatively cheap iPhones have been waiting for the sequel ever since.
Those fans may not have to wait much longer. According to a new report from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the third-gen iPhone SE will be launched in the spring of 2022, which is in line with numerous previous reports.
Few details are known at the moment, but most likely we can expect a more powerful processor (the A14 or A15), 3GB of RAM and 5G support. Hopefully there will also be improved cameras.
And more intriguingly, Kuo claims that Apple is simultaneously working on the fourth-gen model, which will feature a larger screen and other upgraded specs, and will come out in 2023. It seems likely that this will be named the iPhone SE Plus, although this project is more speculative than the imminent model.
“We expect Apple to release a new iPhone SE in 2023 with a larger display than the [early 2022] SE’s 4.7in and 4GB of memory support (vs 3GB in the [early 2022] SE),” writes Kuo (via MacRumors). “We predict that Luxshare-ICT will be the NPI supplier for the 2023 iPhone SE.”
In the past, there have been rumours of a design based on the iPhone XR, but there are growing indications that Apple is sticking with the old design based on the iPhone 8.
