This week, several new details have emerged about Apple’s rumoured mixed-reality headset, a device expected to blend elements of both VR (virtual reality) and AR (augmented reality).
Display Supply Chain (via 9to5Mac) has released a report in which the analyst firm goes through ten predictions for the coming year. It expects Apple to use not two but three screens in the headset: two micro-OLED panels and one AMOLED. The latter will sit around the two central screens to provide a more natural peripheral view.
The report also reiterates earlier reports that the headset will be expensive, and predicts a price tag (in the US) of several thousand dollars. Display Supply Chain believes the first-generation headset will be targeted at “professionals and developers”, a theory with which we are inclined to agree.
Meanwhile, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims in a separate report that the headset is “delayed” and will be released right at the end of the year with very limited supply, writes MacRumors. He also claims that Apple will use “pancake lenses”, a system whereby light is reflected between two lenses to create a more compact and lightweight design.
